R199, R289, R299: Critical and Creative Thinking

Students identified as "gifted" have the opportunity to be a part of the Gifted Education Program, a 3-semester elective course.  The program begins in second semester of freshman year and continues during both semesters of sophomore year.  The program instructs students in five areas we consider essential to their development: self-awareness, creative thinking, critical thinking, group dynamics, and independent project.

R199:  The core of this course is a self-awareness search which emphasizes developing critical and creative thinking skills.  The students apply these individual learning styles and personality preferences while developing short and long term goals, working on leadership skills, and performing interactive tasks with peers.

R289:  An in-depth exploration of colleges and careers is an integral part of this course as it allows the student to connect to the worlds of business and higher education.  Another focus of this semester is preparation for the independent project in the final semester. Students are guided to select a viable independent  research topic and a mentor.

R299:  This semester students work in conjunction with a qualified mentor and their classroom teacher.  Students apply skills acquired during their previous semesters as they develop skills managing time, conversing with adults, organizing details, and problem solving.  Their independent projects are showcased in June at the District Gifted Expo.
