Scholastic Bowl is an academic competition similar to the TV game show Jeopardy. In Scholastic Bowl, however, the competition is between two five-person teams, with each player specializing in one of four major areas: literature, math, science, or social studies. Players also prep in minor areas such as geography, current events, computers, sports, religion, mythology, pop culture, etc. As on Jeopardy, players utilize lock-out systems, or "buzzers" in order to beat their opponents to the answer. Practices begin the first week of school, with various Saturday tournaments beginning in late October. Over the course of each season, Hoffman Estates competes for the Mid Suburban League conference championship in January and February, as well as for the IHSA stat championship in early March. Interested students should contact the team sponsor in May for competition during the following school year. Freshmen and transfer students should contact the team sponsor as soon as the school year begins.
