Automobile Repair Policies
The purpose of the Hoffman Estates High School Automotive Program
is education. Whereas it is understood that students and
parents need car repairs from time to time, these repairs are
not the primary mission of the automotive program. Students in
the Auto Tech I and Auto Tech II have specific exercises in the
lab which demonstrate automotive theory, diagnostics, and repair.
Repairs on vehicles are accepted if they are on students or parents
cars and the repair fits the unit of study which the students
are studying at the time. Only under specified conditions
may repairs be made. Students in Auto Independent
Study may make repairs on any vehicle so long as the repair is
within the scope of expertise and equipment the facility can
handle. The car owner must purchase repair parts
for their vehicle. There is no charge for any labor provided.
Car owners must sign a letter of understanding that they realize
that the repairs are being done by students and not journeyman
technicians in a retail repair facility.

Parking Policies
Parking for students in the Automotive Shop area is not for the
daily convenience of driving to school. Parking is
limited to only 25 total spaces for nearly 200 students enrolled
in the Automotive program. Temporary Auto Shop permits
are issued for spaces behind the shop by the instructors.
The permits are assigned based on the appropriateness of the work
to be done on a students car.

Attire
Students are required to wear appropriate clothing in the Automotive
area. In classroom situations hats and jackets may not
be worn by district policy. Because of the unusual nature
of the Auto Shop, hats and jackets may be worn in the lab area
only. The cold temperatures in the lab often necessitate
wearing a jacket or coat and can be useful from a cleanliness
stand point. Hats are useful for cleanliness and safety
while working under vehicles. Any clothing worn to demonstrate gang affiliation
will result in immediate referral to the principals'
office. Students are encouraged to bring a jacket, work
shirt, shop apron, jump suit or any type of protective clothing
for shop work.

Attendance
Punctuality is a good habit for all. Excessive absences
will effect grades. Students are allowed to make-up study
questions and tests, but not worksheets or lab work. In cases
of severe illness or unusual problems special arrangements may
be made with the instructor.

Grading
Policies
Auto Tech
I and Auto Tech II are graded on a point system. In Auto
Tech I 2/3 of the points are from classroom activities
such as worksheets, study questions, quizzes and tests.
The remaining 1/3 are from lab activities.
Auto Tech
II points are split 50% / 50% between classroom and lab.
The grading scale used is 90% or greater A, 80% B, 70% C, 60%
D, and lower than 60% is an F. The scale is determined
on the highest student score.
Auto Independent Study is
graded on contract basis between student and instructor.

Safety
Safety is a serious issue in the Auto Shop. Appropriate work clothing and safe working habits are important. All
student must wear safety glasses whenever they are in the shop
area. Slow and careful driving is a must. Any student
driving a car in or out of the shop must possess a valid drivers license. Students should be aware that automotive work
is very tough on the hands, minor cuts, scrapes and bruises are
common place. Safety issues are
covered in great detail in all automotive classes. |

Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills
Contest
Hoffman Estates High School Automotive Students have participated
in the Auto Skills Contest each spring since 1975. The contest
is open to seniors enrolled in an Automotive Technology class.
The contest consists of a written test taken in March and a Hands-On
contest in May where brand new Ford cars are "bugged"
with a dozen or more malfunctions and the student have 90 minutes
to find and repair. To participate in the Hands-On portion
students be in the top 10 in the State of Illinois to advance
to the Hands-On. Hoffman Estates Automotive students have
been in the Hands-On contest 11 times. Hoffman students
have had 1-8th, 2-7th, 4-6th's, 3-5th's, 1-4th, 2-3rd, and 1-1st

in the Nation Finals.

Chi-Town Teardown Pit Crew Competition
In 2002 Hoffman Estate
Automotive students began competing in the Chi-town teardown. This
competition pits area automotive teams, of five students, against each
other to tear down an engine to a bear block and rebuild it to operating
condition. 2003's winning time was 17 minutes.
